How long have you been a silversmith?
I’ve been a silversmith since 2010. I graduated from NBCCD (New Brunswick School of Craft and Design) in 2013 , and took a long hiatus till 2023 (10 years later!) when I had the opportunity to start a jewelry business.
What materials are used in your jewelry?
My jewelry is made from sterling silver, upcycled Canadian copper pennies, copper sheet, and brass.
Is all of your jewelry made from upcycled metal?
I strive to reuse metal whenever possible. This includes melting down scrap metal and incorporating it into new designs, utilizing recycled precious metal scrap, and creatively working with the metal I already have to minimize waste.
What about the upcycled Canadian copper pennies?
Canadian copper pennies are a significant part of my jewelry designs. I use a rolling mill to flatten the pennies into clean, blank canvases, which I then transform into unique pieces of jewelry. It’s amazing what can be done with these copper pennies!
Can you use Canadian copper pennies in jewelry?
Yes, you can! Since February 4, 2013, when the penny was withdrawn from circulation, it has been legal to use the copper as you wish.
Where do you source your pennies?
I source my pennies from my own collection. In the 90s and early 2000s, my grandfather saved all his pennies, and my family continued this practice. When my grandfather sold his home, I inherited our family’s penny collection. Together, we saved thousands of pennies, giving me what feels like a lifetime supply. Reusing these pennies is a labor of love that reconnects me to my family!
Can I donate my pennies to you?
I appreciate the offer, but I have more than enough pennies to last a lifetime!
Why are many White Cat Jewelry designs darkened?
I often use liver of sulphur and other patinas to create an antiqued or vintage look. This is a stylistic choice to give the jewelry a distinctive appearance.
